Recently a group of freshly passed M.D.S. students came to visit me at my practice. All happy with hopes of doing something in life. I asked one student what you want to do, he said Sir, I am going to all dental colleges and will apply for job of lecturer. The other student said but there are no vacancies, the third said as a fresher we don't get attachment as consultant and forth one said I will get married and think after 3-4 years what to do… I said this is terrible!!! You guys have invested 8 year of golden time of your life and lacs of rupees into this and you don't know what to do with life.
I feel this is a failure of our education system. We teach them the subject & don't teach them how to make life out of this. The sad part is this is happening to the "Nobel Profession". I feel the time has come, we must have some orientation programme during their professional degree programme. The universities must not only give a degree holder to the society but who knows what he/she will do after his/her degree programme. A student awarded Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS) degree must know either he/she is clinician, researchers, academician, administrator or good candidate for general dentistry.
I feel there are very few positions of teaching jobs. If the supreme authority controlling the dental education system in our country (Dental Council of India) asks each department of a college/each college to recruit one MDS as "Research Associate" it will help in generating good Research project & Publications and possibly would create more availabilty of job opportunities to approximately 3000 MDS degree holders and overall uplifting of the research programme in dentistry in our country.
